A melonized gear is a hardened gear used on 1996 and later GM Vortec engines with roller camshafts. They are no longer available new so I provide a sleeve to allow you to install your existing Mercruiser gear on the replacement GM distributor. This insures that the gear remains compatible with your camshaft. If your gear is too worn, I can quote a used melonized gear for extra cost. Send a photo of your existing gear asap to determine whether you need another gear.
